CBS Sunday Morning did a segment yesterday about the role of social media in protest, particularly the huge role it's played in the past year. CBS interviewed me, so I'm in it (my bunny makes a guest appearance, too).
As you may know, I started a Change.org petition last fall after Bank of America announced they'd begin charging a $5 fee for customers to use their debit cards, eventually forcing the bank to back down. The power of social media in this case was overwhelming: 300,000 people across the country signed the petition, thousands of comments flooded Bank of America's Facebook wall and Twitter account, and people left the bank in droves.
Now that the BofA petition has been won, I'm working with Rebuild the Dream as we start to build a campaign around student debt. I just graduated in May and I'll be paying off loans for 10 years and I was one of the first people in my family to attend a 4-year college, so student issues are very important to me. It'll be interesting to see how we can use social media to reach and organize students!
